So, were there any assassination attempts on Hitler?
Short Answer: Yes, there were many assassination attempts on Hitler.
Long Answer: There were about 30 different assassination attempts on Hitler from the years 1934-1944 (Website #1).
One of the most famous assassination attempts was the "July Plot" or "Operation Valkyrie." There were at least six attempts that were aborted before Claus van Stauffenberg decided to try again during one of Hitler's conference on July 20, 1944. It was decided that they were going to try and kill Himmler and Goering at the same time. Stauffenberg, who had never met Hitler, carried the bomb in a brief case and placed it on the floor while he left to make a phone call. The bomb exploded killing four people and Hitler's right arm was badly injured from the explosion (Website #2). The bomb went off at around 12:42 p.m. Hitler was charred, wounded, and had temporary paralysis in his right arm. He was still alive, well enough to continue to his meeting with Benito Mussolini that very afternoon (Website #3). With this failure in the "July Plot" they were not able to continue on with Operation Valkyrie. This operation was the attempt to kill Hitler so that German soldiers would be free from him, and their loyalty to him. Operation Valkyrie was meant to give the plotters control over the government so that they could make peace with the Allies and end the war.
It is estimated that 4,980 Germans were murdered after the "July Plot," Hitler decided that it would be best for them to all have a very slow death. They were hanged with piano wire from meat hooks, these murders were filmed and shown to NSDAP and the armed forces (Website #2).
