So, why did Hitler want to steal famous art?
Hitler was obsessed with having power so why wouldn't he be trying to take all the famous art that he could. It was rumored that Hitler was going the try and build a "super museum" that would contain every important artwork in the world (Website #3). Hitler stole some of the most important pieces of art that he could find, some include the Madonna of Bruges, the Astronomer, the Portrait of Dr. Gachet, and the Saint Justa and Saint Rufina (Website #2). During the time of the World War Two and the Holocaust there were men that set out to go and find all the artwork that was stolen and return it the their rightful owners, they were called the Monuments Men. The Monuments men knew of the plan to loot all of the artwork but they didn't know that it would round up to about 5 million cultural objects were looted, lost, and mishandled during the time of the war (Website #3).
It is also said that since Hitler wanted to be an artist when he was younger that this was one of his reason for stealing some of the biggest art pieces in the world (Website #1). Within the same website, it is said that Hitler knew that one of the only way he knew he could get power was if we could get complete domination of culture, including art and architecture. The great works of that were stolen by the Nazis are still now getting returned to their rightful destination to this day (Website #1).
If Hitler was able to do what he wanted to do and have the Fuhrer Museum the experience would be harrowing, terrifying, and fascinating (Website #3). We have Allied heroes-- Monuments Men, soldiers, officers, and countless under-sung citizens-- to thank for saving Europe's art and the world.
In conclusion, Hitler wanted to steal the art for many reasons like his try in world domination, his love for art, and that he was trying to build a "super museum" to showcase all that he has taken from all the people of Europe.
